Stockport 1-5 Gillingham: Match Report

08 January 2011 17:34
Hatters humiliated by Gills Managerless Stockport's woes continued after they slipped to a 5-1 hammering from a rampant Gillingham side. Despite the dismissal of the manager Paul Simpson and the introduction of four new loan signings, there was little change at Edgeley Park as County were humiliated. Cody McDonald opened the scoring for the visitors on 32 minutes following a mistake by Ismael Demontagnac, the Hatters' new loan signing from Blackpool. The hosts came alive in the ten minutes either side of the break, thanks to the promptings of new skipper Greg Tansey, whose efforts saw Wes Fletcher and Demontagnac just fail to level the scores. But when Gillingham attacked for the first time in the second half after 51 minutes, the defence was again at fault as McDonald fed Andy Barcham to put the Gills 2-0 up. When the Gills made it three just five minutes later, McDonald heading home Danny Spiller's cross, it looked all over as a contest. Demontagnac did pull a goal back for the Hatters on 69 minutes, but from the kick off Curtis Weston dribbled the ball upfield and slotted home the visitors' fourth. The excellent McDonald then completed his hat-trick on 78 minutes when he headed home substitute Luke Rooney's cross to complete a great afternoon for his team.
