Simpson: We lacked spirit

Paul Simpson warned his Stockport side they face a battle to stay in the Football League after they were beaten 2-0 at home by Morecambe. The Hatters slipped down a place to 21st in League Two and are just four points above second-bottom Hereford after goals from Chris Shuker and Jimmy Spencer gave Morecambe victory. Stockport have now failed to win in their last six home matches, and Simpson was alarmed by their latest setback. He said: "I don't think we've shown spirit for 90 minutes to be honest with you. We were totally spiritless, characterless and deserved nothing out of the game. "The goals were just absolutely diabolical goals to be giving away. "We've had a bit of life about us over the last few weeks in training and in games against Crewe, where we showed some spirit and character to come back, and against Barnet away, where we showed some tremendous character, and for an hour at Chesterfield. "You're thinking that we've got three home games so let's throw a performance out for the fans and then we go and throw out a performance like that. There's no explanation for it and they can hide behind me and the flak I'll get. I just wonder whether they understand what a dogfight we are in and what you have to do to get out of it."
