Simpson upbeat despite defeat

Stockport boss Paul Simpson took heart from his side's display despite exiting the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after losing 4-3 on penalties to Tranmere. After a disappointing game, Peter Gulacsi made the vital save from Adam Griffin's spot-kick to ensure Rovers a trip to Bury in the next round after being reinstated to the competition following Accrington's resignation. "We did everything but score," he said. "I'm delighted at the way we went about the tie. We have shown we can compete against sides in a higher division than us but sadly we have still lost the game. It was a cruel way to go out of the competition on penalties but we can take a lot of pluses from the match. "Unfortunately it was not our night but it was a fantastic performance. We created no end of chances and with a more ruthless streak we could have won the game easily. "We had the lion's share of possession but did not take advantage and we got punished in a shoot-out."
