Reid gutted by Hatters plight
The move follows a petition by a creditor who is owed £300,000 by the League One outfit but Reid revealed County had been working desperately hard behind the scenes to put together a rescue package.
Chief executive Sean Connolly said: "We were absolutely convinced that the deal could have been completed within the next 36 hours."
And Reid said: "I am absolutely gutted. To have been so close and to have the rug pulled from under our feet is soul-destroying.
"I can now only hope that Stockport County can rise from the ashes."
