Mathias clings to survival hope

Stockport manager Ray Mathias insists his side can retain their League status following a crucial 2-1 win over Port Vale. Anthony Elding scored two headed goals for the Hatters as they kept alive their hopes of survival. "The important thing was we won this game to give us a chance of survival and that's what we've done," Mathias said. "We've got another massive game against Northampton on Monday and we will have to win that one as well. I hope they have a few jitters after seeing this result. "It was a terrific performance by the players and I think we deserved it overall. We gave the ball away unnecessarily at times, but we also did a lot of good things and the spirit they showed was excellent. "There have been times when we would have caved in when we conceded a goal, but the mentality has been changed and I always felt we were in with a chance of scoring another goal."
