Hatters look to Simpson

Stockport have appointed Paul Simpson as their new manager. Simpson, who was sacked as Shrewsbury manager at the end of last season, replaces Gary Ablett at the cash-strapped club. County entered administration in April 2009 and were saved from extinction by a takeover from the 2015 Group consortium following their relegation to npower League Two last term. "I'm delighted," said Simpson after his appointment was announced at a press conference on Monday morning. "I know it's not going to be an easy job and I know it's going to be a challenge. Hopefully we can get back to where the club was under Jim Gannon and put a smile back on the fans' faces and give them something to shout about." Chairman Alwin Thompson added: "I am very pleased we're sitting here with Paul because I think it's a great appointment to take this club forward." The job is Simpson's fifth managerial assignment following stints with Rochdale, Carlisle and Preston before his time at Shrewsbury. He will be assisted at Stockport by Peter Ward and Alan Lord who have overseen the club's pre-season preparations so far.
