Ablett hopeful of Hatters takeover

Stockport boss Gary Ablett is hoping to find out on Thursday if the Football League has approved a bid from the Melrose Consortium to buy the cash-strapped club. The league's board of directors is set to meet in Preston to decide whether to hand County their `golden share' of league revenue and allow the consortium to complete a takeover. Administrators Leonard Curtis had been hopeful the buyout would be completed by `mid-January' but the league refused to approve the bid because `a number of issues had not been resolved'. If a deal is not agreed, County could face expulsion from the league at the end of the current campaign, but Ablett told the Stockport Express: "We have been told that the takeover could be close. I've had conversations with the consortium over the past fortnight and I'm probably as hopeful as I've been. "We would obviously like it to happen because it might give us that bit of stability off the pitch that would allow us to progress on the pitch. We'll just have to wait for Thursday and hope for positive news. "I would doubt that anything on or off the field will change significantly but I think it's just the thought that we would have that stability behind us with someone coming in to take the club forward. I think that's something that we all look forward to because until that happens I've got four or five members of staff with no protection because they are working without contracts."
