Minstermen end wait for win

Wes Fletcher scored twice as York claimed their first win of the season as they withstood a strong fightback by 10-man Stevenage before eventually prevailing 3-2.

Boro spent more than an hour with 10 men but fought back from two goals down before Fletcher's penalty ended a run of five consecutive draws for the Minstermen.

York raced into a two-goal lead inside 15 minutes as Sam Beasant failed to keep out a Michael Coulson free-kick before Fletcher finished into the bottom corner to round off a swift counter attack.

Boro then had Andy Bond sent off for a lunge on Fletcher but Chris Whelpdale gave them hope when he nodded in from close range after Bira Dembele had flicked on Walton's free-kick.

And the home fans went wild with 25 minutes left when Tom Pett rifled in after Marvin McCoy failed to cut out Whelpdale's long throw.

But City restored their lead when Pett bundled over McCoy in the area and Fletcher held his nerve from the spot to send Beasant the wrong way.
