Stevenage hold off Plymouth pressure to earn win

Teddy Sheringham recorded the second win of his short reign in Hertfordshire as Stevenage brought Plymouth's good run to a shuddering halt with a 2-1 win.

First-half goals from Connor Ogilvie and Chris Whelpdale put the home side in command and a better second-half showing from the visitors fell short.

Stevenage took the lead in the sixth minute from their first attack. Midfielder Tom Pett managed to slip his pass through to Ogilvie in space on the left and the full-back's low drive deflected up and over the despairing hand of Pilgrims goalkeeper Luke McCormick.

The home side almost doubled their lead four minutes later when Whelpdale struck the post with a curling effort that left McCormick helpless.

Stevenage found the target again, though, when Dean Parrett rode two challenges down the right before picking out Charlie Lee, whose shot was turned in at close range by Whelpdale.

Plymouth improved after the break and substitute Craig Tanner's header halved the deficit, but they could not find an equaliser despite dominating for long periods of the second half.
