Stevenage boost play-off hopes

Stevenage moved themselves to within goal difference of a place in the Sky Bet League Two play-offs with a 2-1 victory over Newport County with Bira Dembele grabbing his first goal of the season.

The 'Boro moved above their opponents thanks to their second win against a near rival in the table this week, but the visitors have dropped out of the top seven.

Stevenage broke through just after the half-hour mark when Simon Walton's corner was met by the head of Charlie Lee, who buried his eighth goal of the campaign.

Miles Storey was presented with a great chance to equalise early in the second half following Dembele's mistake but his rather tame attempt was pushed out by Chris Day.

But Stevenage doubled their lead with a quarter of the game left and it was from another set-piece as Dembele nodded in Ben Kennedy's free-kick.

Newport were to give themselves some hope as Adam Chapman sent a crisp volley into the bottom corner, but they were to lose Chris Zebroski to a late red card.
