Spot-on Walton bags Boro the points

Simon Walton scored the winning goal from the penalty spot as Stevenage stretched their unbeaten run to five games with a 2-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon at the Lamex Stadium.

Tom Pett had put the home side ahead just after the half-hour mark, only for Wimbledon to pull level shortly afterwards through George Francomb.

However the visitors, fresh from running Liverpool close in the FA Cup on Monday, could not hold on to a point as Walton made no mistake from 12 yards out after Deji Oshilaja had fouled Dean Wells.

Stevenage started brightly and should have led after three minutes as Chris Beardsley missed two gilt-edged chances, first snatching wildly at a volley before looping a diving header over the crossbar.

But Boro did eventually take the lead after 32 minutes as the lively Pett finished clinically from close-range after Adam Marriott's shot was deflected into his path.

However, the advantage was short-lived as Wimbledon equalised three minutes later as Francomb curled a left-foot shot into the corner of the net after cutting in from the right-hand side.

Walton went close after 57 minutes with a free-kick before confidently dispatching his penalty in the 69th minute.
