Charles goal hands Boro victory

Stevenage ended a run of back-to-back defeats after Darius Charles' fortuitous first-half goal was enough to give them a 1-0 victory at home to Shrewsbury.

Charles netted the only goal of the game less than ten minutes before the break when his left-footed volley took a massive deflection and wrong-footed Shrews goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler.

Shrewsbury thought they had stolen a point at the death but Jermaine Grandison saw a header rebound off the bar as they searched for an equaliser.

The visitors' best chance of the first half came when Connor Goldson released Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro over the top but he wasted the opportunity and fired wide of the left post.

Charles got lucky after a free-kick to give Stevenage the lead in the 36th minute before James Collins provided Akpa Akpro with another chance at the near post but Sam Beasant was equal to it.

Connor Calcutt and Charlie Lee were both denied by Leutwiler as Stevenage started the second half brightly and Bira Dembele was wide with a free header while Grandison hit the bar late on.
