Stanley end winless run

Sean McConville fired home his sixth goal of the season to give Accrington their first win in seven league games as they beat Stevenage 1-0. In a dour first half of few chances, Stanley's Ray Putterill had a strike pushed out by goalkeeper Chris Day and the midfielder couldn't fire home the rebound. But Stevenage also tested Reds keeper Ian Dunbavin when Lawrie Wilson went on a run from the half way line on 35 minutes and finished with a firm shot which the stopper parried away. Jay O'Shea looped the ball over the crossbar on the stroke of half-time for the visitors before the game got increasingly niggly after the break with most of the players involved in a melee in the Reds penalty area with Stanley defender Sean Hessey booked. Borough's Chris Holroyd then had a goal disallowed for a foul in the build-up on 65 minutes but, two minutes later, Stanley's Jimmy Ryan played in a superb ball from the right and McConville flicked the ball into the far corner of the net from eight yards out. Home substitute Andy Parkinson could have made it safe six minutes from time with a fierce drive which was just wide but the Reds held on to move clear of the bottom two.
