No go for trialists

Three players looking to win contracts at Saints will have to try their luck elsewhere. Lewis Guy, Alan O'Brien and Alan Gow have all been told they won't be getting a deal with the club.

Even if Saints wanted to sign Guy they couldn't due to FIFA rules. The striker has featured for both MK Dons and Oxford this season and isn't allowed to play for a third club during the current campaign. Considering the 26-year-old, who started out at Newcastle, has only scored 23 league goals in his career he's probably not a massive loss.

O'Brien also started at Newcastle, the winger going on to play for Hibs, Swindon and Yeovil. The winger had worked with Saints assistant Tommy Craig on Tyneside but it seemed odd we were looking at him as it's not a position we need to strengthen. Sure enough, he's on his way.

The Dougie Imrie signing last week has also ended any potential deal for Gow. The one time Falkirk and Rangers man was due to sign for Saints last year but messed the club around and joined Motherwell instead. He's back in Scotland after a stint in India and there was anger from a number of Saints fans we might try to sign him after what happened last season. Fortunately that now won't be happening.

Defence is the position we most need to strengthen so it's odd no defenders were on trial. However, what this does show is Danny Lennon is still trying to strengthen his squad ahead of the transfer window closing next week.
