Mac stands by Sutton

St Mirren boss Gus MacPherson has refused to blame leading scorer John Sutton for his side's failure to see off Motherwell at the weekend.

Sutton wasted an opportunity to win the game midway through the second half, seeing his penalty kick kept out by Steelmen goalkeeper Colin Meldrum.

MacPherson said: "Up until we missed the penalty, we had been doing very, very well and you could see the effect missing the penalty had on the team.

"But I'm not putting the blame on anyone.

"Strikers put themselves up to the plate and it's a great chance for them to try to add to their goalscoring tally.

"But sometimes you have to give the goalkeeper credit."
