Indoor plans moves forward
Saints hope to have an indoor training area up and running by the end of the year with plans and funding in place to put a special dome above the five-a-side pitches behind the away stand at Greenhill Road.
The whole project will cost in the region of £150,000 with £50,000 coming in the form of a loan from the St Mirren Independent Supporters' Association. £40,000 has been secured from the Scottish Football Partnership and £13,000 was raised at a dinner, while it is hoped a sponsor can be found for the top of the dome, their name being visible to people on planes landing and taking off at Glasgow Airport.
The hope is the dome will be in place by the end of the year. The five-a-side pitches will still be used but the fencing dividing them up will be taken down so that one big pitch can be used if necessary. The first and youth teams will be able to use the facility, which will also be rented out to other clubs to generate some cash.
As well as providing somewhere the players can train in all weathers, the new facility is vital to help the club's pro-youth set-up achieve club academy elite level with the SFA.
Sounds like a great idea - let's just hope the new dome can survive the Scottish weather and the local neds!
