Harkins becomes a Buddie
Gary Harkins became Saints first signing of the summer today after the Dundee midfielder agreed a two year deal.
It's a bit of a surprise to see the 28-year-old end up in Paisley as it seemed over the weekend he was heading for Motherwell. News of Paul McGowan staying at Saints also made Harkins' arrival unlikely but this afternoon his arrival was confirmed on a two year deal - with an option for a third.
Harkins, who was also wanted by Dundee United and former club Partick Thistle, is capable of putting in some superb performances in midfield when he is in the mood. The trick now is ensuring he is in the mood on a regular basis, rather than the sort of mood that has seen him fall out with managers at former clubs Grimsby and Kilmarnock.
The latter happened earlier this season, which saw him head for a second spell at Dundee. He played a key role in their resurgence and if he can find that form he'll be a good signing, providing we can fit him and McGowan into the same midfield.
Meanwhile Paul McGinn, who turned down a new contract at Saints, has signed for Dumbarton. The defender - who is the brother of current Saint John and former Saint Stephen - spent the second half of last season on loan at the first division side.
