Buddies seal a double deal

St Mirren have signed former Ayr United goalkeeper Craig Samson on a one-year deal, having allowed both Mark Howard and Chris Smith to leave the club.

The 26-year-old arrives on a free transfer and is expected to challenge Paul Gallacher for a starting spot.

Boss Danny Lennon told the club's official website: "We feel that we are getting a quality player at very good value by bringing Craig in, who will challenge for the number one shirt.

"I'm sure Craig Samson will push hard and not settle for not being the starter - as he wouldn't be here if he was just happy to sit on the bench."

The Buddies have also snapped up Cowdenbeath striker Gareth Wardlaw on a one-year contract. The 31-year-old helped the Blue Brazil gain promotion to the first division last season.
