McInnes' Cup of woe

Published: 07 Feb 2010 - 14:31:19

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes admitted his side had suffered a Co-operative Insurance Cup hangover as they were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Tayside rivals Dundee United. The Perth outfit were defeated 2-0 to Rangers at the semi-final stage of the League Cup in midweek and reacted with a lacklustre display as they went down to David Goodwillie's solitary strike for United.McInnes bemoaned a lack of spark in the home ranks and confessed that the Tannadice outfit had been worthy winners. He said: "Hands up, there's no question United deserved to win. They looked a bit brighter and sharper over the pitch."They've got a lot of energy and we need to have that to produce our performances. Normally we've got that in abundance but there were a lot of tired legs out there."We're disappointed, we thought it might be a factor and we tried to freshen it up to try and give us that spark but the spark wasn't quite there."
