Irvine given McInnes backing

St Johnstone defender Gary Irvine has been backed by manager Derek McInnes to fight his way back into the starting eleven following a frustrating time on the sidelines due to injury.

The 24-year-old has featured just four times of the Saints this season, with a summer ankle operation having left him struggling to make a full recovery.

However, McInnes told the Dundee Courier: "There's no doubting Gary's ability or attitude and I fully expect him to do well for us again.

"It's been difficult for him finding himself in this situation, having been used to playing week in week out. He's frustrated and no matter what I say it's hard for him.

"But Gary has just got to keep himself right mentally and physically so he's ready to step in, because I'm sure his opportunity will come."
