Samson on his way

Saints goalie Craig Samson has confirmed he is almost certain to quit the club in the summer after turning down the offer of a new contract.

News that Samson was likely to leave emerged last week and the keeper has gone public about his decision today.

He said: "The bottom line is that right now there are no negotiations. The club have made me an offer and I have been unable to accept it. The manager has made me aware that it was a take-it-or-leave-it-offer and, although I don't expect they will come back to me, I will remain hopeful.

"The bottom line is that I am 29 now and I need to make sure I make the right move for both myself and of course my family and their security. In respect of these two aspects I just couldn't accept the offer on the table."

Interesting words from the goalie, who has been superb for us for the last few seasons to the extent he forced himself into the Scotland squad and played a key role in our league cup success. It would seem there is no room for negotiation but it would be interesting to know why he turned down the offer. Was it not a long enough deal, was he not being offered enough cash or was he possibly being asked to accept less than his current wage?

Whatever, it seems from this he'll probably go with Motherwell and St Johnstone supposedly interested in signing Samson, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
