Pre-season kicks off with narrow defeat

Saints' first "friendly" of the summer ended in defeat this afternoon when they lost 1-0 to English Championship side Barnsley in a bounce game.

The two sides met in Spain, where they are both involved in their own training camps. Kelvin Etuhu scored the only goal after just a few minutes, new Buddie Lewis Guy having a late goal chalked off for offside. It wasn't a proper friendly with numerous substitutions taking place over the course of the match.

Just about every first team Saints player got 45 minutes under their belts, Darren McGregor and Gary Teale left out due to slight niggles. A number of youngsters were also involved and apparently showed up well, which is good news considering we'll be going with a smaller squad this season.
