One in, one stays

Newcastle's Conor Newton has become Saints first signing of the January transfer window, while goalie Chris Smith is going to be hanging around a little longer.

Newton's arrival had been expected for some time and the midfielder will be in the squad for tomorrow's game against Kilmarnock. The teenager will be on loan at Saints until the end of the season and it is hoped fellow Newcastle youngster Paul Dummett will also be around until then.

The news that Smith is staying is a bit surprising. He returned to Saints in the summer after new recruit Grant Adam got injured. His deal was due to expire yesterday and with Adam back fit it seemed he was on his way. However, Smith has now had his deal extended until the end of the season, suggesting Adam's spell on loan at Airdrie may also be extended until then.

Meanwhile, Saints boss Danny Lennon is still trying to piece together a loan deal for Sporting Kansas City's Dom Dwyer and news has emerged he is also trying to borrow a Portuguese player from somewhere. I seem to recall hearing Cristiano Ronaldo is unhappy at Real Madrid...
