The midfield playmaker's deal was due to expire in the summer, at which point expected he would head down south. However, it emerged on Friday he was set to sign a new deal at Saints over the weekend - although the lack of news had a few Buddies worried!
The deal was finally signed today, McGowan agreeing to a one year extension rather than the longer the deal the club reportedly wanted. As most Saints fans had resigned themselves to the former Celtic man leaving we should be happy he's signed any sort of deal and worry about it's length at a later date.
McGowan is a key part of the way Saints play their football and was a huge loss when he was injured last season, so having him around for another year is a massive boost.
