Loan stars Celtic bound?

Saints boss Danny Lennon faces a fight if he wants to bring Newcastle pair Paul Dummett and Conor Newton back to the club, with SPL champions Celtic rumoured to be interested in the pair.

Dummett and Newton had a very successful time on loan at Saints last season, not just because of their involvement in our League Cup success. The pair benefited greatly from the first team exposure and have both been offered new contracts at St James Park, although have yet to sign them.

A number of English are reported to be interested in them, however the pair's agent Spencer Downey has claimed that Celtic are interested in them. There's no mention of whether it would be a loan or a permanent deal but it would be a strange move as they are well catered for in both Dummett and Newton's positions and they would surely want first team football wherever they go.

Saints boss Lennon is keen to bring them back to Paisley next season and Newcastle have agreed if they sign for us permanently, rather than on loan, they'll waive any compensation fee - something they're unwilling to do for any other club.

Lennon said: "They are two boys we still want at our football club, but I can see and respect their ambitions, in that they want to try to play at the highest level they can. They want to see if they can be in Alan Pardew's plans - I totally understand that."

Downey has also confirmed Saints want the pair back, so it's very much a case of wait and see.
