Graham Cummins welcomes St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright's new four-year deal

St Johnstone striker Graham Cummins has welcomed the stability afforded by Tommy Wright's new contract - but he was in little doubt that the manager would stay.

Saints rebuffed an approach from Dundee United during the international break which hastened talks between Wright and chairman Steve Brown over a new deal.

A four-year contract was swiftly agreed which vindicated the confidence in Cummins' team-mates.

The Irishman, whose team host Partick Thistle on Saturday, said: "Speaking to the guys in the dressing room who have been here a while, they were sure that the gaffer wouldn't go to Dundee United.

"But it was obviously good when everything was confirmed and the manager got his new contract.

"When there is speculation it can make things a bit uncertain in the dressing room but the club has real stability now.

"The manager brought me here a few months ago and has been great with me. It's a fantastic atmosphere among the squad and we hope to go from strength to strength now."

Saints go into the game in the bottom half but could move level on points with third-placed Hearts if they continue their recent form.

They have scored eight goals in victories at Rangers and Aberdeen, which sandwiched victory over Dundee United with 10 men.

Cummins said: "The last few games have been great but just because we won 5-1 up at Aberdeen doesn't mean we can just turn up and beat Partick Thistle.

"Every game in this league is tough and they have just had a lift with their win over Dundee United."

David Amoo aims to keep moving on up after kick-starting his time at Partick Thistle with two goals and a victory.

The former Carlisle winger netted his first goal for the club against Motherwell before heading the opener in a 3-0 win over Dundee United the following weekend as the Jags got their first win of the season last time out.

Amoo said: "It's always good to hit the back of the net so to get a goal and a win was great.

"We had to wait a long time for the first win but it was a great relief, especially going into the international break. It would have been a long two weeks if we didn't get the win.

"We are so happy we got the win and hopefully we can push on from that.

"We had some good games but didn't have the rub of the green. But you have to create your own luck and we did that against Dundee United and scored some good goals."

Despite Thistle taking 10 Ladbrokes Premiership games to claim their first triumph, they immediately moved off the bottom and are now looking to get out of the bottom two.

Firhill boss Alan Archibald said: "We knew we weren't playing too badly. It's very, very fine margins and we got goals at the right time in the Dundee United game that made the difference.

"It gives us the chance to build on it and there is not too big a gap there. We were always there of a gap opening up and if we can get a good win against St Johnstone it makes it tighter."
