Czech league leaders Sparta Prague on Monday parted company with their general manager Jozef Chovanec, blaming the move on unsatisfactory results.

Despite topping the table at home Sparta failed to qualify for the Europa League after failing to make it past the preliminary qualifying rounds.

"We haven't achieved our objectives set before the start of the season," explained club president Daniel Kretinsky.

Chovanec, who until recently combined both coaching and mangerial functions before handing over the coaching duties to Martin Hasek, said: "The objective wasn't reached, you have to assume your responsibility."

The 51-year-old is a former Czech international and played his club football with Sparta and Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.
