Spain's reserve goalkeeper Victor Valdes Wednesday slapped down critics of coach Vicente del Bosque, with the team having reached the quarter-finals despite not firing on all cylinders.

"I neither understand nor share the criticism of the coach. Things can go well or badly but the results are there for all to see," said Barcelona keeper Valdes, understudy to Iker Casillas.

"We have to think of getting through the quarter-finals (against France) and nothing more. (Del Bosque) has got everything right. You must respect him and the team," said Valdes.

"He protects the players in what he says and we must remain true to our philosophy," Valdes added.
