Spain's press on Friday welcomed the 4-0 demolition of the Republic of Ireland and in particular Fernando Torres' performance up front after criticism of coach Vicente Del Bosque for starting the first group game without a recognised striker.

"Spain finally has a number nine for the Euros," said sports daily Marca. "Torres seized the opportunity that Del Bosque gave him to score twice and and as a result close the debate on La Roja's attacker."

El Pais headlined its article on the game "Torres takes command".

The AS daily celebrated a return of a "champion's attitude" among the players.
