Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Friday he will attend the Spain-Italy game in the Euro 2012 competition in Poland despite just obtaining a eurozone banking rescue.

"I am going because the Spanish team are world champions and I think it is good that the head of government be at this inaugural game," Rajoy told a news conference.

He said he would leave at around 2:00 pm (1200 GMT) and be away only a few hours, and that he would attend the inauguration on Monday of Luis Maria Linde as the new governor of Spain's central bank.

Rajoy said he was making the trip at the invitation of Poland.
