Cristiano Ronaldo

The world’s most expensive footballer will have to deal with the weight of his country on his shoulders tonight as Portugal prepare for Spain tonight in the first semi-final. Ronaldo is seen as Portugal’s main threat and if he doesn’t perform they will struggle to break down this classy Spain outfit. Many of Ronaldo’s opposition play with him at Real Madrid and will have ideas on how to keep the hit-man quiet. As joint top scorer Ronaldo will be looking for more goals and securing a shock place in the final for Portugal. Although Portugal have a resolute defence they rely heavily on Ronaldo for goals which may be their downfall if Arbeloa can keep him under control.

Xabi Alonso

The 30-year-old is probably the best defensive midfielder in the world at the moment and his incredible passing ability causes his opponents all sorts of problems. He doesn’t score many but his partnership with Andres Iniesta and Xavi makes for an unbelievable looking trio. Alonso has played a big role for his national side and recently made his 100th appearance for Spain joining Xavi in the hundred club. Vicente Del Bosque sees Alonso as a key member of the squad and has become the second highest- scorer since he took charge in 2008. As Spain are rumoured to be including Fernando Torres tonight, Spain’s world class trio will be vital in supplying the hit-man with balls into feet and in behind the Portugal defence.
