Del Bosque will respect Paraguay

30 Jun 2010 - 09:30:26

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque is expecting a tough quarter-final against Paraguay on Saturday evening after watching his side edge to a 1-0 victory against Portugal.

Since losing their opening group game to Switzerland, the Spaniards have been moving through the gears and produced their best performance of the tournament against Portugal, winning the match thanks to David Villa's second-half strike, his fourth goal at this World Cup.

However, Del Bosque is only too aware that Paraguay will be dangerous opponents. They drew with both Italy and New Zealand at the group stage, as well as beating Slovakia, before winning their last-16 clash against Japan in a penalty shoot-out after two hours of football had failed to result in a goal.

Del Bosque said after his side's victory against Portugal: "The match was extremely intense.

"It was quite even in the first half, but we always controlled the game and, in the second half, we were better than them. We had greater depth but it was a difficult game and our rivals were extremely solid.

"We shall not underestimate Paraguay and prepare for them with great respect.

"They have very good defenders but also attackers. We must be fully focused to win that match. We know how difficult it is to be victorious, we can't take anything for granted. We must be hugely respectful of our next opponents."
