Aragones extends Spain stay

30 Jun 2006 - 14:16:42

Spain's veteran coach Luis Aragones has decided to stay in his job and help guide his country into the next European Championships.

The 67-year-old had previously looked set to leave his post following Spain's World Cup exit at the hands of France, but Aragones has been persuaded to stay on for two more years.

"The Spanish Football Federation were pleased with my work and this motivated me to extend my contract," Aragones confirmed.

He had said the morning after Spain's 3-1 second round loss to Les Bleus: "I said if we didn't finish among the top four I would go and today I still think the same.

"I got up this morning angry with myself because we didn't achieve what we set out to do.

"But I have a clear conscience. I am going to continue coaching but I don't know where."

Spain had previously gone 25 games undefeated since Aragones took charge straight after Euro 2004.
