- 50 players to watch: The complete list

Name: Fernando Torres

Age: 26

Club: Liverpool

Country: Spain

International caps: 72

International goals: 23

Born in 1984, Fernando joined his local side Atletico Madrid at just 11 years of age.

After working his way up the Atletico youth ranks, he made his first first-team debut in 2001 - going on to score 82 goals in 214 appearances over the next six years.

Known as 'El Nino' (The Kid), Torres also starred for the Spanish youth setup, representing his country at every level since appearing for the under 15 side in 2000.

He made his senior debut just three years later, and has hit 23 goals from 72 games so far.

In 2007 he moved to Liverpool for a club record fee reported to be in excess of £25 million.

His three seasons at Anfield have yielded a phenomenal return of 56 goals from just 79 games, leading to widespread speculation about a move away from Merseyside.

Although he endured an injury-hit campaign last season, Torres' pace and finishing ability will be vital to Spain's chances of lifting the World Cup for the first time in their history.
