Southend United manager Steve Tilson accepted that a lack of experience proved costly, after his side's relegation from the Championship was confirmed by a home defeat to Luton Town.
The Shrimpers drop back into League One after just one season and Tilson had no complaints.
He told the Southend Standard: "We needed to have a bigger squad.
"As well as that, I think we could have done with two or three more quality players to strengthen the side, because we just fell at the final hurdle.
"Going into the season we only had three players - Spencer Prior, Efe Sodje and Lee Bradbury - who had played in the Championship before.
"Maybe that was another problem and it's just so disappointing because having worked so hard and done so well to get up, we really wanted to stay in that division but it wasn't to be."
