Tilson plans to keep Barnard

Southend United manager Steve Tilson hopes top-scorer Lee Barnard will pen a new deal with the club shortly.

Several clubs have been linked with Barnard, who has found the net 16 times already this season, but Tilson says he has received no offers for a player who is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Tilson told the Echo: "There have been no approaches for Barney but I wouldn't expect them until January, when the transfer window opens again.

"We want to offer Barney a new contract because we want to keep him here.

"He wants to keep his options open though and that's his perogative, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens. If someone comes in with a bid then we'd weigh it up."
