Sturrock boosts Baldwin: 'Supporters appreciate the standards he reached the last time Swindon Town

Colchester United Southend United manager Paul Sturrock knows he's made a fine signing in bringing central defender Pat Baldwin to the club from Essex rivals Colchester United.

Sturrock: 'I think he is a good leader of men'

The last of Blues boss Paul Sturrock's winter signings was our former loanee Pat Baldwin on a free transfer until the end of the season.

A fine player the last time he was at Roots Hall, Luggy looks upon the centre-back as the last piece of a jigsaw that has seen five new players join the club, while midfielder Michael Timlin signed on a permanent contract after being on loan from Swindon since August.

Sturrock told BBC Essex: "Supporters appreciate the standards he reached the last time he was here. I watched him a couple of times but I think he is a good leader of men, a good defender. I feel it appropriate with a couple of defenders carrying wee niggling knocks or coming back from injuries and being put straight back in the team again. I think competition for places is important as well."

Fellow centre-half Mark Phillips and defensive midfielder JP Kalala are having late fitness tests before Tuesday evening's vital home clash with fourth placed Swindon Town, while skipper Chris Barker has not been at his best since returning from a calf injury last December.
