The expected defensive loan signing never happened before Thursday's deadline, however with the injury situation as it is Blues boss Paul Sturrock can look at the emergency option. Sturrock: After earlier quotes from the Shrimpers manager Paul Sturrock many of the faithful were expecting to hear news of at least one defensive loanee arriving at Roots Hall in time for Tuesday evening's game at Cheltenham Town.Peter Gilbert is out suspended, and the next two matches as well, while the two in-form United players, Bilel Moshni and Antony Grant, will sit this one out as they have been handed five yellow cards.Centre-backs Chris Barker and Mark Phillips are injured, and Graham Coughlan, Luke Prosser, Barry Corr Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk: "We need to turn these draws in to wins and will be looking to move players out and bring others in during January to help this happen. I am looking at the loan market at the moment to see if there's anyone available who could give us a different option for a couple of months. Even so, Luggy is hoping that he can keep as many of the present squad together and playing as he hopes to build the sort of team spirit that has helped the present promotion contenders in League Two. The Blues boss continued: "But this season is all about looking to create a settled side. Once that is done we can look to push on - just like Port Vale and Torquay have done. They are now doing well after having more or less the same side for a couple of years and that's what we're aiming for as well." So that's this season blown then, not so says Luggs.Sturrock concluded: "However, that is not to say we're giving up on this season because I want Southend United to stay as close as we can to the play-offs. But the injury situation and who we can bring in during January - along with a bit of little luck - will have a big say in whether that can happen or not."
