Shrimpers sweat on Barrett

Southend United are facing an anxious wait on the fitness of club captain Adam Barrett, who limped out of their pre-season friendly with Ipswich on Wednesday.

Barrett is currently the only regular central defender at the club and if the injury is serious it leaves manager Steve Tilson desperately short of cover.

Tilson confirmed he is unsure how bad the injury is, but is hoping for a speedy return from the 29-year-old.

"It is too early to tell how bad Adam's injury is at this stage," Tilson told the club's official website.

"Hopefully he is only going to be out for a week or so before joining back in because we need him."

Simon Francis, a wing-back, and midfielder Jean-Francois Christophe were used as a centre-half pairing in the absence of Barrett.
