Southend United defender Efetobore Sodje fractured his fibula in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Bournemouth and has been told the injury will sideline him until the start of pre-season training.
The 33-year-old was forced to have surgery on Monday after a scan showed the severity of the injury.
United physio John Stannard told the club's official website: "We took Efe for a scan and it's not good news at all.
"The surgeon will insert a plate into the leg and then he'll be in plaster for a short period of time.
"We're looking at three months before he returns which obviously puts him out of the rest of the season."
