Shrimpers snare Mulgrew

Southend United added Wolves defender Charlie Mulgrew to their ranks late on transfer deadline day.

The left-sided defender joined the Shrimpers as a ready-made replacement for Steven Hammell following his £110,000 move to Scottish Premier League side Motherwell.

Mulgrew has joined the League One on loan until the end of the season.

"We offered Stevie a new contract a month ago," boss Steve Tilson told the club's official website.

"But to be honest his family hasn't been happy in England since day one and he has wanted move back to Scotland for a while now.

"It is a good deal for the Football Club as we signed him on a free and we have signed a good replacement."
