Shrimpers snap up Foran

Southend United have boosted their strikeforce with the £200,000 signing of Motherwell's Richie Foran.

The 26-year-old Irishman has signed a contract running until the summer of 2009 at Roots Hall after opting to end his stay with the SPL club.

Foran joined the Steelmen in the summer of 2004 on a free transfer from Carlisle United and went on to score 35 goals in 105 appearances for the Fir Park club.

He had previously netted 29 times in 107 outings in all competitions for the Cumbrians following his arrival from Shelbourne.

The Shrimpers had also been keen on Foran's former team-mate Scott McDonald, but were told that the Australia international was not for sale.
