Shrimpers opt to release nine

Southend United have released nine players following the end of their League One campaign.

The Shrimpers missed out on the play-offs by five points and have decided to release first-teamers Charles Ademeno and Peggy Lokando.

Meanwhile, youngsters Jamie Forshaw, Luke Thurlbourne, Rhys Henry and Dan Harvey have also left Roots Hall following the end of their contracts.

Elsewhere, chairman Ron Martin insists the club have learned their lessons and will attempt to sign up new players quicker than in previous seasons.

Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson had only a handful of players under contract just weeks before the recently completed season kicked-off.

"You don't just suddenly start thinking about new signings when the season comes to a close," Martin told the club's official website.

"It's an ongoing process throughout last season too and you're constantly looking at potential targets.

"We are targeting particular positions and we then see what players become an available which is what we are doing.

"It is still very early days and there haven't been any bids from us yet but we would want to get players in quicker this year because continuity is very important."
