Shrimpers keen to keep Gower

Southend United midfielder Mark Gower has been urged to sign a new Roots Hall contract by the Shrimpers' assistant manager Paul Brush.

The midfielder, whose current deal expires at the end of June, has been linked with a move to Championship newcomers Swansea City.

Brush told the club's official website: "An offer has been made to Mark Gower and we've got to try and pull that together now over the next couple of weeks.

"We need to set a deadline though otherwise we could be hanging on forever.

"We need to know what we're looking for replacement-wise, so we'll need an answer from him pretty soon.

"A good contract has been put in front of him and we hope he stays here to be a part of how we want to push on."
