Riera signs for Shrimpers

Southend United have signed Sunderland midfielder Arnau Riera on loan until the turn of the year.

The 25-year-old Spaniard has struggled to make his mark with the Black Cats, having joined the club in the summer after playing for Barcelona's B side.

Riera has made just two first-team appearances, with his only league action coming as a substitute against the Shrimpers at Roots Hall back in August.

On his only other outing, Riera was sent off after just four minutes of the shock 2-0 Carling Cup first round defeat at League Two Bury.
