Southend fought hard but two second half goals gave the home side the win and send the Shrimpers to their ninth successive away defeat. Max Gradel's goal on the hour and a header from substitute Luciano Becchio seven minutes from the end was enough to give Leeds the points and see Southend's final hopes on escaping the drop depending on two home games in a row next week.
