Hooper happy at Southend

Former Grays Athletic forward Gary Hooper is hoping to make his mark after earning a one-year contract with Southend United.

The 18-year-old impressed during pre-season with the Shrimpers and is hopeful that he can cope with the step up in class from non-league football.

He told the club's official website: "It's a big move for me, but I just have to take it in my stride.

"Pre-season was good for me, as well as scoring a couple of goals on trial, which helped Steve Tilson make a choice.

"Training is a big step up and I like the football Southend play at a higher level.

"I'll keep doing my best in training and hopefully my chance will come in the first team."
