Blues begin Clarke talks

Southend United have opened talks with on-loan striker Leon Clarke over a permanent switch to Roots Hall from Sheffield Wednesday.

The 22-year-old has netted seven goals in 11 appearances for the Shrimpers to date and Blues boss Steve Tilson is hopeful of keeping Clarke in the fold.

He told the Southend Echo: "We have started talks with Leon. He's obviously done really well for us, so we want him to stay.

"There was a fee agreed over a permanent move when we sorted out the loan switch and I would like to think that wasn't a problem, so it will come down to whether or not we can agree terms with Leon.

"We hope we can, because he has made a big difference since coming here."
