    Barrett pledges Blues stay

    01 Jan 2008 - 15:12:23

Southend United centre-half Adam Barrett has pledged his future to the club by agreeing a new long-term contract.

The 28-year-old had been a target for local rivals Colchester United, but has opted to remain at Roots Hall, with his new deal running until the summer of 2012.

Barrett told the club's official website: "I was flattered by Colchester's interest, but I wanted to stay at Southend and I'm really happy to have tied down my future.

"There are great years ahead and I'm just coming into my prime so I was pleased that the club value me enough to offer such a long deal."

Chairman Ron Martin added: "Adam is an integral part of our squad and he is exactly the sort of person we want at this football club."

Meanwhile, the Blues have also sealed the £5,000 signing of winger Damian Scannell from non-league outfit Eastleigh.
