Southend United captain Adam Barrett has backed his side to challenge for an immediate return to the Championship.
The Shrimpers slipped out of the second tier of English football after just one season, having won just ten league games out of 46, but Barrett is ready to bid for promotion again next term.
He told the club's official website: "When things are not going well you learn more about people, about their characters and what you do well.
"But when you are winning it can just paper over the cracks. We can learn an awful lot about this year.
"It was a disappointing year, no doubt about it, but what we have learnt, and the infrastructure we have put in place, means we can become a better side."
